Defense Overview

  • Focus on: Geospatial Intelligence, C4ISR, Net Centric Enterprise Services and Homeland Security
  • Key Actors: Defense Departments, Agencies and Ministries; NATO; UN; Military Surveys; Defense Remote Sensing Agencies
National military and intelligence communities are increasingly challenged by the proliferation of structured (databases of individuals, organizations, targets, sensor records and electronic transactions of any kind), unstructured (intelligence, diplomatic, and military cables; World Wide Web Content; e-mail; and other documents), and spatial (maps, features, and coverages) data sources. Historically, data processing has been largely stove-piped between these three classes of data – as well as within these three classes of data. The ability to easily cross-exploit structured, unstructured, and spatial data in near real time, and in a way that performs at enterprise-scales, has largely been absent . This is a problem if National military and intelligence communities are going to be able to anticipate and react in near real time to emerging threats.

In the last few year, Defense Intelligence Communities have issued several directives that systems comply with OGC technologies. IONIC has had a significant hand in demonstrating the value of these technologies and as such, has contributed greatly to these directives being issued.
